The ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio) is Brazil's national secondary school exit examination, administered annually by the INEP (National Institute for Educational Studies and Research). The University of Melbourne now lists ENEM as a recognised qualification for direct entry, provided students also meet minimum SAT or AP score requirements.

For Brazilian expat families abroad, ENEM remains the most natural pathway to Brazilian universities upon return. Schools in the UAE, Portugal, and across South America that serve Brazilian communities often prepare students specifically for ENEM alongside local requirements. Brazilian families considering international university options increasingly sit SAT or AP exams alongside ENEM.

ENEM and the IB serve very different purposes. ENEM is a national examination designed to measure readiness for Brazilian university — it tests broad knowledge across five areas rather than subject specialisation. The IB is an internationally designed qualification built around six subjects, extended research, and community engagement.

For Brazilian expat families: if a student is confident they will return to Brazil for university, ENEM preparation is essential and ENEM scores are what Brazilian universities use. If the family is considering international universities, the IB or A-Levels are more universally portable — though ENEM plus SAT or AP is an increasingly viable combination for students targeting both Brazilian and international options simultaneously.
