O ENEM Brasileiro

O Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio — Brazil's national secondary school examination, the gateway to Brazilian universities through SISU, and a qualification increasingly recognised by international institutions.

What it actually is

The ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio) is Brazil's national secondary school exit examination, administered annually by the INEP (National Institute for Educational Studies and Research). Unlike Brazil's earlier vestibular system — which required separate entrance examinations for each university — ENEM provides a single score used across thousands of Brazilian public and private universities through the SISU (Unified Selection System) platform.

ENEM tests students across five areas: Linguagens e Códigos (Languages and Codes), Ciências Humanas (Human Sciences), Ciências da Natureza (Natural Sciences), Matemática (Mathematics), and Redação (Essay). Each area is scored from 0 to 1000 using TRI (Item Response Theory), a sophisticated psychometric model that accounts for question difficulty — meaning two students who answer the same number of questions correctly may receive different scores if one answered harder questions.

ENEM and the world

ENEM is primarily a domestic qualification, but its international recognition has grown significantly. Portugal accepts ENEM scores directly for admission to Portuguese public universities — a significant pathway for Brazilian students seeking a European degree. The University of Melbourne now lists ENEM as a recognised qualification for direct entry, provided students also meet minimum SAT or AP score requirements.

For Brazilian expat families abroad, ENEM remains the most natural pathway to Brazilian universities upon return. Schools in the UAE, Portugal, and across South America that serve Brazilian communities often prepare students specifically for ENEM alongside local requirements. Brazilian families considering international university options increasingly sit SAT or AP exams alongside ENEM.

The five ENEM areas
What each area covers
Linguagens e Códigos
Portuguese language, literature, foreign language (English or Spanish), arts, physical education. Tests reading comprehension, textual interpretation, and linguistic analysis.
Ciências Humanas
History, Geography, Philosophy, and Sociology. Tests understanding of social phenomena, historical processes, geopolitical concepts, and philosophical reasoning.
Ciências da Natureza
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Tests scientific reasoning, environmental knowledge, and the application of natural science concepts to real-world situations.
Matemática
Mathematics and its technologies. Tests quantitative reasoning, problem-solving, and mathematical applications — typically the area with the widest score variation among candidates.
Redação — The Essay
The Redação is scored separately (0–1000) and carries enormous weight in SISU calculations. Students write a dissertativo-argumentativo essay on a social or political theme — in 2023, the topic was "Desafios para o enfrentamento da invisibilidade dos povos indígenas." A score of 1000 in Redação is extremely rare and highly prized.
A brief history
1998
ENEM is created
Brazil's Ministry of Education creates ENEM as an evaluation tool to assess secondary school quality across the country. In its original form, it is voluntary and used primarily to diagnose educational standards — not yet as a university admissions tool.
2009
ENEM becomes the university gateway
A major reform transforms ENEM into Brazil's primary university admissions examination, replacing the old vestibular system at most federal universities. The SISU platform is launched, allowing students to use a single ENEM score to apply to thousands of university programmes across Brazil simultaneously.
Today
8 million candidates and growing international reach
ENEM now attracts approximately 8 million registered candidates annually, making it one of the largest university entrance examinations in the world. International recognition continues to grow, with Portuguese universities and a small but increasing number of institutions in Europe and Australia accepting ENEM results.

ENEM vs IB — honest comparison

ENEM and the IB serve very different purposes. ENEM is a national examination designed to measure readiness for Brazilian university — it tests broad knowledge across five areas rather than subject specialisation. The IB is an internationally designed qualification built around six subjects, extended research, and community engagement.

For Brazilian expat families: if a student is confident they will return to Brazil for university, ENEM preparation is essential and ENEM scores are what Brazilian universities use. If the family is considering international universities, the IB or A-Levels are more universally portable — though ENEM plus SAT or AP is an increasingly viable combination for students targeting both Brazilian and international options simultaneously.

Who tends to thrive

Students who thrive in ENEM preparation tend to be broad readers with genuine curiosity about current affairs, social issues, and how different academic disciplines connect. ENEM questions often require applying knowledge from multiple areas simultaneously — a Biology question might involve an environmental policy context that requires social science reasoning too.

The Redação in particular rewards students who read Brazilian news, understand current political and social debates, and can construct a clear, structured argument in Portuguese under examination conditions. Students who focus only on scientific subjects often underestimate how much the essay and human sciences areas affect their final SISU-eligible average.
